All residential properties are tested by two devices.  Non-residential properties are usually tested by placing a radon testing device in each room of the lowest elevation of the building.

Testing of licensed child care centers must meet the requirements of both the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the New Jersey Department of Human Services.  Child Care centers can only be tested by the owner of the building if the building is in his or her name or by a licensed radon measurement technician or specialist.

Written reports are provided with all radon tests.  Reports for child care centers include a table that specifies the location of each radon test device along with the results for each room.

ABOUT RADON

Radon is a gas that is odorless and  colorless that can easily go undetected. Radon that comes from the ground where it is formed from the natural breakdown or decay of uranium.

High levels of radon is a serious problem that can be fixed relatively easily. It is important to have a radon test in order to determine the levels inside your home. Undetected  high levels of radon gas goes undetected for long periods of time have been linked to lung cancer.

The only known health effect associated with exposure to elevated levels of radon is an increased risk of developing lung cancer.

Radon enters buildings through cracks in concrete blocks, slab, footing joints, and exposed soil as in a sump pump, weeping tile, mortar joints and loose fitting pipes.

RADON TESTING METHODS

There are several methods, which can be used for the purpose of measuring the level of radon.  Each method used by A&M has been accepted by both the USEPA and the NJDEP.

Electret Ion Chamber

Electret canisters are passive devices. This means they are not powered by electricity. Inside the monitor is an electronic field that reads alpha particles emitted by radon decay.   There are no known interferences with the test; therefore they are extremely reliable.

Used extensively in real estate transactions. The test takes a minimum of 48 hours. A&M has a licensed laboratory on site which ensures prompt result, typically 4 hours after the test is retrieved we are able to provide accurate results.

Verbal results within four hours of the devices being returned to the laboratory with a written report placed in the next day mail.

Charcoal Canister

Used in real estate transactions:

                                     Short-term – Two days minimum

(Not as accurate as Electret)

Results can be affected by high humidity, volatile chemicals and by handling

Verbal results are available within one week.  Tests are performed by a separate radon testing laboratory.

Alpha-Track

Used to perform long term testing prior to mitigation activities.

Long-term  - Six to twelve months

Verbal results are available within two weeks. Tests are performed by a separate radon testing laboratory.
