There are several reasons why an engineering evaluation is necessary. As homeowner, you notice a crack in the foundation walls, roof trusses were damaged during installation of attic steps, or a home inspection was conducted and the home inspector noticed a structural defect. Home inspectors who are not licensed engineers can not address any structural defects; they must refer you to an engineer.

Horizontal cracks in a block wall could be caused by hydrostatic water pressure on the exterior of the wall, improper backfill during construction, or by settlement. Our engineer will evaluate the crack, measure the wall to determine if it is bowed, and provide recommendations for repairs. When needed, a drawing with a raised seal can be provided, however this is not always necessary.

Step cracks in a block foundation wall can be caused by a footing failure which resulted from poor soil quality or shifting of the soil. These cracks must also be evaluated to determine the proper repair.

Cracks in solid concrete walls can be caused by shrinkage of the concrete as a result of excessive moisture or a footing failure. These cracks must be evaluated to determine the proper repair.

Roofs that are supported by a truss system have been pre-engineered to support the weight load of the roof. Cutting a truss effects the structural integrity of the design and usually requires repair. An attic staircase is supposed to be installed in between the trusses.

When a homeowner wants to add an addition to their current property, an engineer can be called out to determine if the addition is plausible.
